Civitavecchia cruise pier is the closest cruise port to Rome. It’s located 80Km(50 miles) North of the Eternal City. It’s a small town with about 50.000 residents.
Main town activities are sea-based: Fishing and sea transportation for goods and people. There is the ferry pier for Sardinia and Genova as well as the cargo pier for the goods and the cruise port.
It was built over an Etruscan settlement by Roman Emperor Trajan in 107 a.d. which also created the ancient harbour.
Despite the heavy bombing that the town suffered during World War II, you can still find Archelogical sites with Roman ruins in the surroundings.

It’s a nice town with mild climate throughout the year. Romans like seaside, and this is one of the most favourite places. It can get quite crowded in summer, Bank Holidays and weekends.

Reaching the town by public transport can be problematic, as there’s no express connection with Rome City. A possible choice is to catch the shuttle train that from Civitavecchia train station located about 1km/0.6mi from cruise pier. The train leaves every 30minutes and will take you in about 80 minutes to main Rome train station, Termini. After that you’ll have to take the right bus, underground or taxi to your accomodation.
Total price for the journey would be about 15€ per person if you reach you accomodation from Rome by bus or underground. Prices will obviously be higher if you want to take a taxi.
